QUARTERLY INDUSTRY UPDATe
Organizations Lobby for Charitable Deductions - A coalition of 19 nonprofit organizations sent a letter to members of Congress in September 2011 urging support for keeping charitable donations tax deductible. Congress is beginning work on efforts to reduce the federal spending deficit, which could include reducing or eliminating some tax deductions to raise revenue. Individuals and corporations that donate to nonprofits are motivated partly by income tax deductions. The letter was signed by the United Way, the American Red Cross, and the Association of Gospel Rescue Missions.
Increase in Donations Reported - Of more than 800 nonprofits surveyed by the Nonprofit Research Collaboration, about 45 percent reported an increase in donations during the first half of 2011 compared to the same period the previous year. A quarter said donations remained level, while 30 percent reported a decline in giving. Those results were nearly identical to survey esponses received at the end of 2010. For many organizations, donations have yet to return to levels seen before the late-2000s recession.
